Steps to a More Sustainable Us

Our mission is to connect people to plants, which ultimately leads to healthier people and a healthier planet. But wait, there’s more! As a business we make a million tiny decisions each day about how we make and deliver products. We approach these as opportunities to learn, improve and do more good than harm to our planet.

Garden Jars

Our new net pot is made from 100% post consumer recycled plastic from domestically-sourced bottle caps, so we’re taking something that otherwise would end up in a landfill and making a useful, repeat use component from it.

Grow Lights

Our Grow Frames are hand-crafted in the US to reduce the carbon footprint of importing large goods. In addition, the LEDs last up to 3 years, and we offer an at home LED replacement kit to extend the useable life of your Grow Frame.

While most party favors and small gifts are made from single-use plastic, we designed our Seed Pops to be plastic-free. Not only that, they inspire even the youngest among us to fall in love with gardening.

Choose packaging carefully

What's on the Outside Matters, too

We want every Modern Sprout product you choose to be beautiful, functional and sustainable. But we don’t stop there. We do our best to opt for plastic-free paper packaging. As we’ve learned over our years in product design, sometimes coating is essential to the function of an item. But many times? It’s an aesthetic choice, meaning it might look good, but it doesn’t work any better.

Then, we work with suppliers that are willing to help us find better materials. These efforts help keep plastic out of our packaging and out of landfills.

You Can Recycle That

We avoid packing peanuts and bubble wrap and opt for recyclable brown kraft paper in our outbound packages. We also use paper tape, so shipping boxes can be recycled.

Since we’re not a massive corporation, we don’t necessarily have the clout to force large manufacturers into eco-friendly materials and practices. So, we ask a lot of questions to find partners with our same commitment to protecting the Earth before we place orders.

Thoughtful Transitions

After the Garden Jar Redesign, we transitioned our replant kits to be in standing paper pouches, removing the old plastic bag they were in previously out of the equation.
